First toys for true loves Wednesday...

Thank goodness we're a family of hoarders and packrats.  While sorting through and organizing my spare bedroom, computer and sewing room, which somehow became the place to dump stuff I wasn't sure what to do with, I came across my very first doll and little shoe bank tucked safely in a box.  Her paint has been worn off from being constantly held in my wee hands all those years ago and there's still one tiny bead that rattles.  She's packed away no more and has found a place of honour on my dresser.  Afterall, she is one of my first true loves and has lived with me through more than 22 moves in her lifetime and mine, so I think she deserves to stand out!

my mother has her first and only doll still, mum has held up much better over the past 70 years than her doll...
the little doll's head is ceramic and looks much like yours with a hole in the head for the ribbon, but the body is muslin stuffed with straw. to this day mum will still make knitted dresses and booties...

I think toys like this tell a wonderful story, no words needed. It is surprising to see what cherished toy an adult will carry forward through their lifetime...I don't have my first doll, however, I still have Pluto, a Disney original, stuffed dog that has a metal zipper running up his back (to put pjs in--gosh they'd have to be lingerie size to fit in behind the zipper). Your doll & little shoe are so cute! Thanks for visiting me, which I only noticed today because I have been blog absent...loved hearing about your flamingo and teapots!

oh my she is gorgeous!

She deserves pride of place my dear, such a precious sweet thing full of love and memories.

First dolls are always the loveliest, even though they may be somewhat worse the wear for all the love they've had. I found my first doll a few months ago, cold and in an old chest - she is now out in the warm and on display, where she belongs, even though she only has one eye, six fingers and her hair has been croppped!
Do you know this poem, 'The Lost Doll' by Charles Kingsley?

I once had a sweet little doll dears,
the prettiest doll in the world,
her cheeks were so red and so white dears,
and her hair was so charmingly curled.
But I lost my poor little doll dears
as I played on the heath one day.
I searched for over a week dears,
but I never could find where she lay.
Oh, I found my poor little doll dears
as I played in the woods one day.
Folks say she is terribly changed dears
for her paint is all washed away.
With her arms trodden off by the cows dears,
and her hair not the least bit curled,
yet for old sakes's sake she is still dears,
the prettiest doll in the world.
